Australian Cattle Dog Pups [aka Queensland Heeler]

(but not Workaholics)

If you don't actually have any cattle, you should read the next paragraph:

You have been hearing how great the Australian Cattle Dogs (aka Queensland Heelers) are, and it's true.  They are extremely smart, affectionate, and useful creatures.  But you may also know about this breed's 'obsessive working desires.'  They can be overly-serious about their former job; they were in the herding business for a few generations and they naturally want to work about sixteen hours a day keeping your cattle from straying away from your herd.  If you don’t have any cattle, this can be a problem.  They have been known to herd people.  Some neighbors and guests actually find this annoying.

These pups have been mellowed out because one of their great great grandfathers was a Labrador Retriever (a congenial and notoriously lazy breed, ie capable of sleeping up 22 hours per day).  Hence no papers, and unless you have a large working ranch, I assure you this 15 to 1 mix is to your advantage, because now you can own a blue Aussie that isn't such a workaholic.  And these particular pups have the heart of an Australian lion, each one thinks it's the leader of the pack.

These are definitely better dogs for the 6% Labrador contribution.  And since they are not obsessed with working, they will have more time for guarding you, playing with you, and licking your face.

Older Brothers and Sisters

The Father

The father is the primary reason you want one of these pups.  I’ve known hundreds of dogs in my life and this one is far and away the most magnificent in my experience.  He has more brains, heart, and courage than any animal known to me.   He won't just look you in the eye, he'll look right through you.  If it is cold, he will try to warm your bed before you retire.  He won't tolerate rattle snakes in his territory, and strangers get treed.  So if there is anything to this genetics issue, his pups are likely to be the smartest, most affectionate, bravest animals available on Earth.  It doesn’t matter whether you are looking for a mouser, a love puppy, or a guard dog,  this is your best bet because these dogs are smart, and they think for themselves.  They will frequently surprise you as to how much they know about their world, and how much they care about you.

The Mother

The mother is also a great Australian blue, worthy of the father in all respects.  Her 'Bentley mark' is even more prominent than that of the father.
